My wife and I drove from our southwest home, literally to the other side of the city to Big Bite Pizza & Donair, an establishment under new ownership to meet with a few friends and fellow car enthusiasts.

Located in the far north-east corner of Edmonton in a strip mall in a residential neighbourhood and previously catering to the local Middle Eastern Crowd, this has been a go-to place for locals to get their fix of well prepared and tasty faire like Shawarma, Donair, Hummus, and Falafel.  Of course, these can be toppings for their Poutine offerings along with their homemade sauces and gravies.

In business with the new owners for a scant 2 weeks on the day that we attended, I was surprised and delighted with the quality of their offerings.
The new owner, wanting to expand their offerings to focus on artisan style pizzas, etc. flew to Toronto to attend the School of Italian Pizza, and his wife to Chicago to attend the Carpigiani Gelato University to study the art of gelato making in preparation for the new gelato machine that Big Bite has on order from Italy. Who knew there was a University of Gelato making?

We all shared a few varieties of pizza, and it's obvious that the lessons in the art of pizza making paid off, as the crusts of the pizzas were some of the best that I've ever had.  Very thin Neapolitan crusts, light and airy were the star, topped with just the right amount of various high quality ingredients.

Shane, the owner confirmed that he uses only the best 00 Italian flour in his crusts.

He is currently experimenting with different artisanal toppings for his creations, and I suspect would be glad to custom make one on request.

Still catering to his established Middle Eastern crowd, with the additions that he and his wife will make to the expanding menu, this place should be an even bigger hit with the neighbourhood, and is worth the drive across town to sample extraordinarily good pizza for those not close by.

Keep Big Bite Pizza & Donair in mind when you want something that's not from one of the chains and a huge step up from the normal neighbourhood pizza joints.

I can't wait to try the gelato!

I had the Chicken Wrap- farm fed boneless chicken legs seasoned with spices. Barbecued on rotisserie, trimmed with slicer and cooked over the giddier to perfection.

The spices were unique, the crispiness of the wrap was a delicious surprise, I loved it so much that I had no time to take a photo.

There are so many other items I would like to try. It is a small family run business.

Support the local, support the small business, try something new!
